AeroPress Coffee Filters

Microfilters

When you purchase an Aeropress coffee maker, it comes with 350 micro-filters. You place the paper filter in the filter cap, which closes the chamber.

AeroPress paper filters maintain the original taste of the coffee. The brewed coffee is rich, smooth, and without bitterness. One of the AeroPress instructions is that you have to rinse the filter before using it.

To maintain the taste of the coffee brewing, pre-wet the filter with hot water. The microfilters are grit-free. They prevent coffee particles from passing into your coffee cup.

After a successful brewing session, dispose of the paper filter and the puck in a dustbin. You can also buy additional micro-filters from a store to continue brewing.

AeroPress Coffee Instructions

Before I get started with the Aeropress coffee instructions, let’s talk about coffee.

When brewing coffee, you may use pre-ground coffee or grind whole coffee beans. There are different coffee grinders available in the market. With the AeroPress, you need a medium to fine grind size.

An example of a coffee grinder is the OXO conical burr grinder. It has an integrated scale to help you grind the right amount of coffee. Besides this, there are other best coffee grinders to try.

For maximum flavor, you can roast your coffee beans before grinding. If you’re interested, check out our article on how to roast coffee beans at home. You can also check the AeroPress buying guide to guide you in using the coffee maker.

Now, let’s have a look at five ways of making AeroPress coffee.

AeroPress coffee Recipe

Did you know you can brew barista-level coffee using AeroPress? If you have only one recipe for making coffee, we have a compilation of other ways in which you can make AeroPress coffee at home or on the go.

As a coffee lover, you need to try different recipes.

We’ll look at the following recipes:

  1. AeroPress iced-coffee
  2. Inverted method
  3. Flat White
  4. AeroPress cold brew
  5. Espresso-style

Here we go!

AeroPress Iced Coffee.

To make iced coffee, you will need to add ice cubes in a cup, and the brewing coffee drips over the ice. The resulting coffee is rich in flavor.

Making iced coffee saves you time from brewing cold coffee, which you have to put in a fridge. Let’s look at how you can make iced coffee while using the AeroPress coffee maker.

What you need:

  1. 15 grams Whole coffee beans/ pre-ground coffee
  2. Coffee grinder
  3. 150 grams of ice cubes
  4. 200 grams hot water at 200F
  5. Thick glass/ cup
  6. AeroPress coffee maker
  7. Micro-filter
  8. Paddle/ stirrer

Method:

  1. Rinse the paper filter with hot water, then place it on the filter cup.
  2. Measure 14 grams of coffee beans and grind to medium size.
  3. Add the 150g of ice cubes in a thick glass or cup.
  4. Twist to close the cap with the filter on the chamber.
  5. Place the chamber on a thick glass or cup and add the ground coffee.
  6. Add the hot water to the ground coffee in the chamber.
  7. Wait for the mixture to settle one minute, then stir. Stirring helps in soaking all the coffee in water.
  8. Place the plunger and press down gently. The brewing coffee passes through the filter, melting down some of the ice cubes in the cup.

The brewing process takes 90 minutes.

After pressing down the coffee, you can enjoy your cup of iced coffee. Press to remove the coffee puck and dispose of the filter into a dustbin. Rinse the plunger to remove left-over coffee and flavor.

AeroPress Inverted method

If you’re using AeroPress, you may already know the two ways of brewing coffee. You can use the standard method or the inverted method. You need to be careful when using the inverted method.

With the standard brewing method, you place the filter cap on a cup or thick glass. The inverted method is the complete opposite. Let’s have a look at how you get started from the initial to the final process.

What you need:

  1. 15 grams Whole coffee beans/ pre-ground coffee
  2. Coffee grinder
  3. 150 grams of ice cubes
  4. 300 grams hot water at 200F
  5. Thick glass/ cup
  6. AeroPress coffee maker
  7. Micro-filter
  8. Paddle/ stirrer

Method

  1. Insert the plunger in the chamber until the fourth circle. Place it on a tabletop.
  2. Add the 15 grams of coffee in the chamber, or use a scoop to add the pre-ground coffee.
  3. Add water to the chamber and let it bloom for 30 seconds.
  4. Stir the water and coffee mixture using a paddle or stirrer.
  5. Rinse the microfilter with hot water and place it in the filter cap.
  6. Place it on the chamber, then twist to close tight.
  7. Wait for the coffee to brew for one minute.
  8. With a cup on the tabletop, hold the plunger and chamber together.
  9. Flip the AeroPress so that the filter cap sits on the cup.
  10. plunge the coffee gently to push the coffee through the filter paper into the cup.
  11.  After the brewing process is complete, remove the coffee puck and paper filter to dispose of and rinse the plunger.

With this method, if you are not careful, you can cause accidents when flipping the AeroPress. Make sure you are holding the plunger and the brew chamber at the same time.

Also, make sure you are fast enough to prevent too much coffee from spilling.

Flat white coffee

A flat white coffee is more of espresso but with less milk. It has more coffee than milk. If you are buying it from a cafe, it is served in a smaller cup than a cappuccino.

Unlike other high-end coffee machines, an AeroPress does not have a milk frother. To make flat white coffee, you will need to improvise a milk frother. You can use a milk bottle.

Also, make sure that you finely grind the coffee beans using a grinder.

Here is a simple brewing process.

What you need:

  1. 15 grams of coffee beans/ pre-ground coffee
  2. 100 grams of 200F water.
  3. 100ml of hot milk
  4. Stirrer/paddle
  5. AeroPress coffee maker
  6. Milk bottle
  7. Cup

Method

  1. Insert the plunger in the chamber, then add the ground coffee.
  2. Add 100 grams of water into the chamber.
  3. Let the mixture sit for 30 seconds, then stir.
  4. Rinse the microfilter with hot water, then place it in the filter cap. Or, you can place the filter in the filter cap and add hot water. The water will drip from the filter cap, thereby rinsing the filter and cap.
  5. Close the chamber using the cap. Holding the plunger and the coffee chamber, flip the AeroPress and place the filter cap on a collecting cup.
  6. Press down the plunger gently. This process should take one minute.

The next step is to prepare the milk,

  1. Place the hot milk in a milk bottle and close it tight. Shake the milk to make foam. Use an insulated bottle or use a kitchen towel to protect your hands from getting burnt.
  2. Pour the milk and foam into a cup. Using a different cup, add the brewed coffee. Carefully pour the milk into the coffee. Pour the milk foam to make your desired art, then enjoy your coffee.

Don’t forget to rinse the AeroPress plunger. That is how you make a flat white using the AeroPress coffee maker. The flat white has less milk.

AeroPress cold brew

A cold brew takes up to 24 hours to make coffee. What if you are out camping, and you do not have access to hot water. What will you do? With AeroPress, you do not have to wait for 24 hours.

You can have your cup in two minutes. Here is how you can do it.

What you need:

  1. 200 grams of room temperature or cold water.
  2. 15 grams Whole coffee beans/ pre-ground coffee
  3. Coffee grinder
  4. 150 grams of ice cubes
  5. Thick glass/ cup
  6. AeroPress coffee maker
  7. Micro-filter
  8. Paddle/ stirrer

Method

  1. Insert the plunger into the brewing chamber. Place it on a firm countertop.
  2. Grind coffee using the coffee grinder or use a scoop to measure and add coffee.
  3. Add a small amount of cold water to the ground coffee. Or up to the second circle mark on the chamber.
  4. Wait for 30 seconds and then stir the coffee and water. Make sure that you stir for one minute. Fill the chamber with water.
  5. Place the microfilter in the filter cap. Rinse it with hot water to remove paper flavor. It also helps to keep the filter intact. Twist to close the filter cap on the chamber.
  6. Holding the plunger and the brew chamber, flip the AeroPress, and place it on a cup or glass. Make sure the filter cap is sitting on the cup.
  7. Press the plunger gently to brew coffee. The brewing process takes 2 minutes.

After the brewing process is complete, rinse the plunger and dispose of the coffee puck and the paper filter.

Now, if you are preparing cold coffee at home, you can also store it in the fridge. You leave it to sit for 12 hours.

After 12 hours, full flavor extraction will be complete. Place the Aeropress on a cup or glass and gently press down the coffee through the filter.

The cold brew is rich in coffee flavor, and it’s not bitter. Remember to rinse the plunger for the next brew.

Espresso style brew

The AeroPress coffee maker brews espresso-style coffee in one minute. You can make Americano coffee and other coffee beverages with the AeroPress coffee maker. Here is how you can brew the coffee.

What you need:

  1. 15 grams Whole coffee beans/ pre-ground coffee
  2. Coffee grinder
  3. 150 grams of ice cubes
  4. 200 grams hot water at 200F
  5. Thick glass/ cup
  6. AeroPress coffee maker
  7. Micro-filter
  8. Paddle/ stirrer

Method

  1. Grind coffee using a coffee grinder to your desired size.
  2. Place the paper filter in the filter cap and rinse with hot water.
  3. Twist to close the cap to the chamber. Place the AeroPress on a cup with the filter cap ready to collect the dripping coffee.
  4. Add the freshly ground coffee to the brewing chamber.
  5. Add water to the coffee and let it sit for 30 seconds.
  6. Stir the slurry mixture for 10 to 15 seconds.
  7. Press the plunger gently to extract coffee through the paper filter.
  8. Once the process is complete, serve your coffee to your desired taste.

To make an Americano drink, add water to the extracted coffee. You can also make other espresso drinks using this method. It’s the standard brewing method using the AeroPress coffee maker.

AeroPress Coffee Making Bonus Method:

In the five recipes above, you will notice that there are two methods of brewing. For instance, the iced coffee method and the espresso-style brew method is different.

Since you are already aware of the brewing method, I’ll show you the other way of using AeroPress. It’s simple to follow along. It’s the method recommended by inventor Alan Adler.

If you find it hard to flip the brewing chamber and the plunger, you can use the standard method. Here is how you do it:

  1. Place the filter in the filter cap. Rinse the two with hot water and let the water drip out to clean the filter. You can also rinse the paper filter before placing it on the filter cap.
  2. Twist to close the filter cap to the chamber.
  3. Add coffee to the chamber using a scoop. Add water to the brewing chamber too.
  4. After 30 seconds, stir the mixture, then place the plunger.
  5. Push down the plunger gently for 1 or 2 minutes. Press until there is a hissing sound. The hissing sound alerts you when the brewing process is complete.

Whichever method you choose, making AeroPress coffee takes you 1-2 minutes, depending on the type of coffee brewing. For hot coffee, it takes the barista one minute, while cold coffee takes two minutes.

When making AeroPress coffee, it’s best to grind whole coffee beans for each brew. The advantage is that you will choose the grind size and have fresh coffee for each brewing session.

The drawback of using pre-ground coffee is that you have to stick with the same grind size. For instance, if you bought a finely ground coffee pack, you will have to use it for each brew.
