Coffee Grinders

A coffee grinder is a device for manual, mechanical or electrical grinding of coffee beans and other bulk products (sugar, crackers, etc.) using rotating millstones, the distance between which is regulated by a screw.

The main advantage of using a coffee grinder is the possibility of obtaining a freshly ground product right before brewing the beverage, which contributes to the preservation of high taste and aroma.

The device of the coffee grinder has retained its design almost unchanged since the first appearance at the beginning of the XVI century in Spain (according to other data in Syria).

The cylindrical shape of modern manual coffee grinders came from the countries of the East. Currently, the market offers a wide range of electric coffee grinders that can be combined with coffee makers and other devices.

What is a Burr Coffee Grinder

In the XII-XIII century, the simplest millstones for grinding coffee appeared. Presumably, in the middle of the 17th century, Turkish manual coffee grinders were used, which became the basis for the creation of desktop European coffee grinders.

Millstones are made from metal and ceramics.

A conventional manual coffee grinder consists of two conical millstones, the distance between which can be changed using a special screw. The more this screw is tightened, the smaller the distance between the millstones and the finer the grinding. The grains fall into a funnel between two millstones, one of which is rigidly fixed, and the other rotates with a handle.

Turkish coffee grinders appeared in the middle of the 17th century. They are in the form of a cylinder, which is convenient to hold in hand. Foldable handle in classic Turkish coffee grinders retracts inside the grinder body. In addition to its main function, it performs the function of a wrench, with which it is convenient to control the grinding adjustment screw and disassemble the grinder for cleaning.

European (French and British) manual coffee grinders, which appeared somewhat later Turkish and based on their design, usually have the shape of a cube with a small retractable drawer, where ground coffee is poured after it leaves the millstones.

A European coffee grinder is inconvenient because it’s fixed part – a wooden box – is inconvenient to fix with one free hand. Thus, if you adjust fine grinding on a European coffee grinder, it will become extremely inconvenient to grind coffee – a badly fixed box will crawl on the table due to a lot of effort. Therefore, such coffee grinders are sometimes attached to fixed surfaces – walls or tables, sometimes supplied with clamps for temporary attachment to the table top.

Electric millstones coffee grinders are widely used in professional activities: in cafes and other areas of the coffee industry. Millstones in electric grinders are conical and flat.

How Coffee Grinder Works

Rotational coffee grinder

A sharp knife is taken for the grinding mechanism. Grinds coffee in seconds, but has a tendency to uneven grinding. Finished coffee is more suitable for making a drink in the Turks. The optimal choice of power for this type of coffee grinder is 160-180 W. High power can burn coffee when grinding, so you should follow the time of grinding. More modern versions of coffee grinders are equipped with electronic regulators of the degree of grinding and automatic shutdown system. This makes it possible to prepare different types of coffee. Bowl capacity can vary from 30 to 70 grams.

Millstone grinder

The principle of operation – grinding through the millstones. Such a coffee grinder as compared with a rotary grinder may have a much larger volume and permissible operating time. Grinding in them is always uniform. Almost all coffee grinders of this type have a separate container for collecting coffee, a regulator of the degree of grinding and the number of loaded coffee beans.

How To Choose a Coffee Grinder

According to coffee connoisseurs, a good coffee grinder requires:

  • Make a uniform grinding so that the particles of the ground coffee are the same size,
  • Minimally heat the coffee. When the grains are heated during grinding, the essential oils are released, which should get into the drink, and not remain in the coffee grinder.
  • Have the ability to adjust the grinding. Different coffee recipes suggest different degrees of grinding – from very fine (for espresso coffee) to large (for brewing in a french press).

The most popular grinders are with knives (rotary) and millstone, in which coffee is ground with the help of steel or ceramic millstones. Choosing a good coffee grinder depends on your preferences.

Rotary coffee grinders (with blades)

  • low price (from 500 rubles),
  • besides coffee, you can grind any other products – powdered sugar, nuts, etc. By design, this is a small blender.

  • uneven grinding. Grinding the grains evenly can only be done very finely by turning the grinder on for a long time – but the coffee heats up a lot, and this will have a bad effect on the taste of the drink.

Millstone Grinders

  • uniform quality grinding,
  • the ability to adjust the grinding,
  • does not heat the grain.

The perfect unit for coffee lovers! But there is a drawback — the price is higher.

Manual Millstone Grinders

  • grind grains evenly, grinding can be adjusted;
  • are relatively inexpensive;
  • stylish and decorate any kitchen.

  • to grind grain, it will take time and considerable effort.

Therefore, when choosing a coffee grinder, consider the advantages and disadvantages of each type of device. And also pay attention to additional features:

  1. The pulsed mode of the grinder will be necessary in case you need to grind very hard products. The engine at the same time works with small pauses.
  2. The manual doser helps to grind a certain amount of coffee.
  3. Additional functions, such as tamper or automatic blocking of switching on when the lid is removed, are not essential functions but will facilitate the use of the device.

If you have not yet finally decided on a choice when buying a coffee grinder, then you should first find out which appliances are less practical:

  1. Discard products made of plastic. Their service life is much less than that of stainless steel counterparts.
  2. It is better not to buy a coffee grinder without an extra cup for ground coffee than rotary apparatuses usually sin. Getting the finished product out of the sharp knives is not only problematic, but also dangerous. Remember that the care of such a device is also difficult.
  3. With a small kitchen, it is not necessary to purchase an apparatus where there is no device for winding the cord, otherwise, it will be inconvenient to store it. However, this aspect is not decisive.
  4. Do not purchase the appliance without rubber “legs,” they provide the grinder with good stability in the operating mode.

How to Use Coffee Grinder

Many fans of the invigorating drink have already purchased devices for grinding coffee beans, but they still do not know how to use them correctly. Setting up a home coffee grinder is a very important step to get the delicate aroma of a freshly invigorating drink.

Instructions for grinding grains:

  1. Check the cleanliness of the containers for grinding and storing the powder after the previous use. Cameras must be clean and must be dry.
  2. Determine the number of grains needed or pour the entire pack (for mill grinders). About 7 grams of beans are used per cup. Do not grind a lot of coffee. Even in the most hermetic containers, powdered powder quickly loses its aroma and invigorating properties.
  3. Turn on the device.
  4. Grinding time in rotary coffee grinders for about 10 seconds – coarse grinding; 13 seconds – average; 15 – 20 seconds – fine grinding and dust.
  5. Pour freshly chopped powder out of the container into a cup.
  6. Make a fragrant coffee.
  7. Clean the empty powder chamber with a dry cloth. Let it air out in order to evaporate previous smells.

Tips for making delicious coffee:

  • When using knife devices, more uniform grinding and protection against overheating is obtained by pulsing the button 2 – 4 times during the grinding time.
  • If the coffee is bitter, reduce the grinding rate.
  • If the drink turns sour, increase the size of the powder granules.
  • Good taste is obtained by mixing different varieties of arabica and robusta.
  • Green grains give some soreness but have a more invigorating scent.

The development of technology has not passed by coffee grinders. Today they have become the most important component of coffee making machines. Manufacturers of such machines make every effort to obtain a fragrant and tasty drink.

Just like with with coffee roasting tools, the choice of what device to purchase remains only for the gourmet and depends on his taste preferences! Hope this coffee grinder review will be a great guide for you.
