A French press is an easy and cheap way of making great coffee. The first step would be to purchase high quality and reliable French press maker. There are many factors in choosing the perfect French press for you including affordability, ease of use, and size.

French Press Coffee

French press coffee is elegant but a bit dense and might come out as heavy. It’s all in the details, however. It normally takes about four minutes to brew a French press. Decanting the coffee immediately after brewing reduced the chances of it becoming bitter or chanky.

French Press also goes by other different names, including cafetière (England and Ireland), cafetière à piston (French), coffee press (North America), or coffee plunger. The patent for the French press was held by two French inventors Mayer and Delforge in 1852.

What Do You Need to Make French Press Coffee?

These are the minimum requirements for brewing French Press Coffee at your home.

  • Hot water — 98-99% of your coffee is just water
  • Coffee — If it’s not coarsely grounded, you need blade or burr grinder to do so
  • French Press
  • Spoon or Stirrer

Optionally it’s nice if you’ve these materials while preparing to make a French Press Coffee.

  • Scale — To measure the coffee size before adding to the French Press
  • Timer — To set an alarm for when the coffee will be ready
  • Thermometer

French Press Coffee Maker

Normally French presses are easily portable and self-contained. There are travel mugs of French Press for hikers and backpackers made of tough plastic that have a sealed lid and a closeable drinking hole.

There are also stainless steel french press makers in the market. They’re similar in design to thermos flasks with a “pull” design. There are also other products with closable shutters on the top of the press. You could also use a French press to make cold brew coffee.

How to Make French Press coffee

You should measure the coffee beans per your need of proportion and grind using a burr grinder or sharp pulse

  • The coffee grounds need to be rough and coarse.
  • You can make this by stopping to invert the grinder.
  • After you make sure it’s ready, pour the grounds into your French Press
  • Heat 4 cups cold water and, then, cool for a minute.
  • You can heat it to 195°F. Pour the water into the French Press and stir it vigorously You need to steep it for up to 4 minutes for a robust brew.
  • When the time is up, immediately press the plunger and drink it when it’s fresh and hot for the best quality.

How to Brew French Press Coffee

Heat the French Press

This step is required to have a warm the French Press maker while you brew the coffee. You should do this by filling hot water into the French Press. It’s needed for both a classic glass or stainless steel French Press. The process needs half a minute before you can grind the coffee.

 Grinding your Coffee

French Press needs a rough and chunky grind size. The coffee should be coarse before you stop the grinding process. You could either use burr grinder or blade grinder. Make sure to not overdo it or even grind as long as a drip machine.

You should only pour the grounds to the French Press once you’re sure about it’s readiness. It’s good to use a timer or see if it’s coarse in the middle of the process for the best effect. The coffee beans should be measured per your need of proportion before you start grinding.

Add coffee and water to French Press

After you finish grinding your coffee coarsely, you should add it to the pot. You need to measure the right ratio of coffee to water for a consistent taste. It can be measured by placing it on a scale before you pour it into the French Press.

The main thing is to have a consistent measurement. Whether you use a scale, a coffee scoop or a tablespoon, make sure to not mix the measurements of the different tools. This would help in making your brewed French Press consistent.

 Blooming

You can now submerge water to the added coarse coffee ground in the French Pot. You can start the timing with the blooming process. While pouring water on the coffee ground, it’s important to cover all dry spots.

It’s good if you could wet all the coffee grounds simultaneously for it to shape flavor in a balanced way. The coffee grounds bubble in the hot water in this process and it penetrates for a delicious taste. You can time this process for upto 30 seconds.

 Stir the coffee

You can fill the rest of the French Press with hot water. After you’ve set it to your need of proportion, stir the coffee. It will integrate it into water instead of hanging around coarsely at the top of your French Press.

The stir should be gentle, however, to avoid bitter flavor from speedy extraction. You can make sure the mesh filter touches the hot water by plunging it down. You can add a little more water if you feel like the coffee is too strong. You need to be careful about too much water, though.

 Plunge for four Minutes

You can set the alarm to ring after four minutes, which is the nominal time for your French Press to be ready. Make sure to leave the coffee grounds on the bottom by pressing it all the way down after the time is up.

You need it to have a robust brew. No need to force this process, however, as it could lead you with a broken French Press. If you overdo the process, it might leave you with an extra bitter taste in your French Press as well.

 Enjoy your French Press

It’s better to drink a French Press immediately after it’s left the plunger when it’s fresh and hot for the best experience. If you can’t drink it right away, you should also not leave some in the French Press since it could get bitter.

You need to have a separate carafe for this purpose. You can pour it whether in your cup or a mug that you use for hiking. You should clean your French Press after each use using the steps listed in your the French Press Maker’s guide.

FAQs about Espresso Machines

Is it possible to brew other coffee types in a French Press?

You can use your French Press for making an espresso at your home. Your French Press can give you a desired taste and texture consistently for an espresso. It’s also possible to use it for froth milk, steep tea or even a cocktail of your choice.

What makes French Press different?

It’s a manual brewing method. This might be frightening for some as the electronic device won’t take care of ingredient measurement. You have to measure, grind, pour in the water, set an alarm to finish brewing and control plunging service. French Press recipes can be several because of this.

Can I make a cold brew with a French Press?

Yes. Your French Press could also be used to brew a cold coffee. For some, a cold coffee is preferable for its smoothness and refreshing taste. What you would need to brew a cold coffee in French Press is a cold water at room temperature.

Is there an ideal brewing time?

Four minutes is the recommended time for brewing your coffee in French Press. This would also keep your coffee beans from burning. You could also time it for three minutes if you want the coffee to be less bitter.

What size of French Press should I purchase?

It depends on many factors. The label in the marks could confuse you as you need to convert the cups to ounces because a cup could be different in size. If you need the French Press while you’re hiking, it’s better to buy the ones that can easily be packable.
