Many years ago, coffee beans processed by wild civet cats seemed to result in a better coffee brew. However, today the practice of coffee picking as well as processing has improved such that you now can get better results when using more modern methods.

Still, the strange process of producing a cup of smooth, yet expensive coffee is one factor that makes the kopi Luwak coffee pricier.

The kopi Luwak coffee is made from coffee beans that are digested by a cat-like animal found in Indonesia that’s called a civet cat or palm civet.

Also, this is the main reason why a cup of kopi Luwak coffee has a unique flavor profile alongside other properties.

Kopi Luwak coffee’s value is influenced by its odd production method, high demand, scarcity, and unique taste. This is what makes it one of the world’s most expensive types of coffee.

The Origins Of Kopi Luwak Coffee

The story of Kopi Luwak coffee started in the 1700s after the Dutch first established coffee plantations in Java and Sumatra. It was then that the locals saw those wild animals would eat the ripe cherries and leave the coffee beans behind.

Since they weren’t allowed to harvest coffee beans, they started making coffee from the discarded beans.

These beans are seeds that have a sort of protection against animals – the caffeine. But, the civet cat is immune to caffeine.

These Indonesia cat-like small animals often eat ripe coffee cherries. Therefore, they harvest the coffee beans when ripe which helps produce good quality coffees. The civet cat is locally called the Luwak.

There are good reasons why Luwak coffee tastes better. One the Civet cats are selective when it comes to their bean choices and only eat the ripe coffee cherries that are ready for harvest.

On the other hand plantation workers back then weren’t as selective so they would often harvest coffee before it reaches its prime.

Secondly, those beans that had passed through the civet cat digestive tract have undergone thorough, ‘washing’. That means the enzymes and fruit pulp left on the beans from the cherries have been stripped clean during digestion. And this leaves an extremely clean coffee bean with fairly low acidity.

The result is Kopi Luwak coffee, which is also called civet cat or cat poop coffee.

Unroasted Kopi Luwak Coffee Beans

To get the Luwak coffee beans, it means the civets have to be removed from the wild. They are then kept on coffee plantations where they are contained in tiny cages.

Research shows that these coffee plantations generally don’t meet general animal welfare standards as concerns shelter, mobility, and hygiene.

Typically, civets are shy nocturnal animals, and most coffee plantations tend to let tourists view the caged civets.

Another issue worth mentioning is that most coffees sold as Kopi Luwak coffee are not authentic.

And since the prices for this specialty brew are so high, it comes as no surprise that coffee sellers will want to make profits – even if they can or cannot access civets.

What Makes The Kopi Luwak Coffees Different?

The process of producing the civet coffees makes a huge difference. The crops used in producing the Luwak coffee are ever-green indigenous plants of Africa and Asia.

These plants are tropical evergreen crops. Also, the plant was imported by Latin Americans around the 1600s.

Coffee beans are in fact seeds that have caffeine that protects them against animals. However, the civet cat is immune to the caffeine.

This civet cat is a mammal in the Viverridae family and a somewhat small animal. Usually, these animals feed on very ripe coffee bean cherries grown in Indonesian.

That means they like harvesting the beans once they are ripe which produces good quality coffees. The civet is locally recognized as the Luwak.

Brewing Kopi Luwak Coffee

Kopi luwak coffee is made similar to other coffee brews both using pour-over, French press, dripping, or even then espresso method.

However note that to get the most from the kopi luwak coffee avoid using flavoring ingredients like milk, cream, and sugar. This is because you’ll not get that rich special flavor. In short, don’t cover or kill the taste, instead just enjoy it.

Why Is Civet Cat Coffee So Expensive?

One word that sums this coffee up is exclusivity. The whole process of waiting for civet cats to consume and poop the beans brings in a whole new element to coffee bean processing. This aspect often relies on these cats’ ability to do their part.

These kopi luwak coffee beans fetch such high prices since they require so much energy and time to ‘manufacture’.

This also means farmers will have to search the forests and even follow the footsteps of the civets to collect their poop for harvest.

What’s more, farmers need to have a meticulous cleaning process after the beans are harvested. Food-borne diseases from fecal contamination are a real risk. Plus disease can be ripe in things that have been consumed first by another animal. This increases the risks to human health.

That means Kopi Luwak coffee is a low-yield yet high-risk good which in turn translates to high costs.

Important To Note About Kopi Luwak

It’s worth mentioning that kopi Luwak coffee is usually produced under animal-friendly yet authentic conditions.

This also suggests that these animals have freely and independently consumed the coffee cherries from the coffee fields and the beans are produced as waste.

The feces are what farmers then collect in their coffee farms and sell for coffee processing.

The kopi Luwak coffee price is very high since its scarce. As a result, farmers are looking for ways to engineer methods they can produce more coffee beans using unethical methods.

Use Of Caged And Farmed Luwak To Produce Coffee

Animal harmless coffee seeds are collected on the coffee farms and collected by the farmers for roasting.

However, some farmers started using unnatural methods to produce the coffees so as to benefit from the lucrative market.

This also means they aren’t troubled by the quality of coffee produced naturally. Their focus is on the money gained from selling their coffee beans.

Due to this, coffee farmers found a few civets that they domesticated and feed them the coffee cherries to produce the coffee via its feces.

Enslaving animal activities do not truly produce the high-quality coffee you would get from the wild civets.

As these cats are wild, they tend to fight if they’re put together in one area. This then leads to scum to death due to distress as they desire to be wild yet again.

Quality Of Wild Vivet Coffee Versus The Farmed Civets

Usually, the Luwak cats only consume the ripe coffee fruits leading to producing good quality coffee with automated filters.

When it comes to the coffee produced by caged civets, it’s not often from the best cherries that are fed to the civets by the farmers.

Normally, the wild civets will find and choose the best coffee cherries from coffee bushes. And this offers you more variety in flavors compared to domesticated cats.

Oftentimes the cats don’t consume anything else other than the coffee fruits. This is the only thing that the farmers offer them.
